VE Day 75th anniversary: As war ends in ...euronews.com
Do you know

what happened

"(…) It was the moment that people across Europe had long been waiting for.
War had raged for nearly six years, but by now the Western Allies had swept into Germany, and the Red Army had taken Berlin. Hitler was dead and Germany had surrendered.
Vast crowds gathered outside the British Parliament and all over central London to hear the prime minister's speech relayed by loudspeaker, officially announcing the end of the war in Europe. (…)
Hostilities will end officially at one minute after midnight tonight, Tuesday the 8th of May (1945)," Winston Churchill declared. "The German war is therefore at an end... We may allow ourselves a brief period of rejoicing. Today is Victory in Europe Day".
VE Day came 11 months after D-Day when Allied forces landed in Normandy on the northern French coast. London and southern England had been under German bombardment until close to the end.(…). World Portuguese Language Day

Do you know that …

"UNESCO approves World Portuguese Language Day.

World Portuguese Language Day will be celebrated annually on 5 May, a declaration from UNESCO that has been deemed a “very important moment” for the language.

“This is the first time UNESCO has made such a decision on a language that is not one of the official languages of UNESCO. Unanimously, people have assessed that a world day of the Portuguese language is very important” diplomat António Sampaio da Nóvoa said in statements to Lusa.

The decision was taken on 17 October at the headquarters of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in Paris, at its executive board meeting.

All Lusophone countries have come together to introduce this proposal, but have received support from countries such as Argentina, Chile, Georgia, Luxembourg or Uruguay, and the proposal was approved unanimously. (…)"

Worker's Day

"Secretary-General's statement on the International Day of Labour

In many countries around the world, today is a day to celebrate workers. This year, with the COVID-19 pandemic unfolding around us, we are truly seeing workers who too often toil unseen.
Perhaps as never before, we recognize the role that essential workers play in keeping our societies functioning — getting food to tables and markets, keeping public transportation running, and – of course – ensuring the operation of our hospitals and health systems.

We are also reminded of the enormous toll that the pandemic is taking on the global workforce.  As the International Labour Organization reported this week, the global workforce will be hit with the equivalent of the loss of more than 300 million jobs.

As we seek to build back better in the wake of this pandemic, the wellbeing of people must be at the centre of economic and social policies with a special focus on who are being furthest left behind.

We can build a fair globalization rooted in equality, sustainability and justice.  The pathway is by honouring the dignity of work not only in words, but deeds —not only once a year, but every day."

Do you know that
"To honour the struggles and gains made by workers and labourers, the first day of May is observed as International Labour Day.

The day is also called May Day or International Workers’ Day.
History
On 1 May, 1886, labour unions in the US decided to go on a strike demanding that workers should not be made to work for more than 8 hours a day. Just three days after the strike began, a blast occurred in Chicago's Haymarket Square leaving many dead.

To honor those who died in the blast, the International Socialist Conference declared 1 May as a day designated for labourers.

The commemorative day was established at a meeting in 1889 and gradually spread to other parts of the world. (…)" (in https://www.firstpost.com/world/labour-day-2020-why-we-celebrate-international-workers-day-on-1-may-its-history-and-significance-8319581.html)
